THE FLAVOR OF THE SIERRA NEVADA MOUNTAINS OF GRANADA, SPAIN

The winery Dominio Buenavista was born from a dream: to be able to elaborate high quality monovarietales wines in our hidden village in the Sierra Nevada.

The first vines were planted in 1992 and the winery was concluded by 1998.  On the farm, beside grapes, we grow figs, almonds and olives from centenary trees of the “Lechin” variety. With these olives we produce an exquisite Extra Virgin Olive Oil exported to the United States with the brand name Veleta.

All the vineyards are within our property, on land where grapes were grown in the past until the Phylloxera invaded Europe in the 19th century. To this day, the locals know the area as “La Viña” (The vineyard), reminiscing past times of exuberant growth.
The land is a blend of clay and slate with high alkalinity and carbonates.

A reservoir, of 130 million liters (34.2 million gallons), was built at the top of this vineyard. Water from Sierra Nevada is collected year around and provides irrigation by gravity to the entire farm. All together we have close to 25 Hectares of vineyards (about 55 acres) with an average grape production of 4,000 to 5,000 Kg. per Hectare. Each vine has individual drip irrigation and they are tended by a team of local workers under the direction of an agricultural engineer.

The grapes coming from own vineyards are hand harvested and selected. Lesser quality clusters are discarded in the field. At the winery, before the grapes are de-stemmed the berries are again selected for superior quality. The red grapes destined to red wines macerate seven to ten days in order to extract aromas, flavors and color.
To conclude the "Erilla" we procured the help if the famous "Flying Vine Doctor", Mr Richard Smart from Australia and he assisted with trellis choice, developing of foliage canopy, correct density and training of the vines.
From this remote area in the Alpujarra we invite the curious wine explorer looking for new sensual adventure to discover with their with their palate our magnificent wines.
